Contactless flow measurement in building materials industry

Elimination of material build ups and pollution

Application
A manufacturer of building materials producing drywall products.
The production process uses clay, which is fed by a screw conveyor from a silo onto a conveyor belt. Between the two conveying devices the material quantity requires to be measured. This was performed by an Impact Flowmeter.
Using the Impact Flowmeter the clay caused contamination and material
build up. Our client contacted SWR to offer a solution to eliminate the
current problems and also being able to increase the throughput.
The system had to be able to be maintenance free over a long period.

Process data
Customer: Building materials industry (Germany)
Product: Clay
Volume: 650 kg - 3 t/h
Installation location: Freefall after screw conveyor
Function: Contactless measuring in freefall, replacement of an Impact Flowmeter

Solution

The MaxxFlow HTC is a non-contact flowmeter capable of measuring high flow rates of dry bulk solids from the discharge of free feeding devices, e. g. screw conveyors, air slides, rotary valves and bucket elevators.
Compared with the previous Impact Flowmeter system the MaxxFlow HTC solved the contamination, material build up, which created errors, and down time due to the high maintenance program required.

Customer benefit
• Contact-free measurement of high throughput rates
• Elimination of material build ups and pollution
• Maintenance-free
• Elimination of Impact Flowmeter specific problems such as dust formation

Screen break detection for monitoring of ground material
Particle sensor for on-line monitoring of coarse grain in the flow Application In many industrial processes control screenings and fractionation play an important role, as well as the reliability of the used screens. In continuous processes a screen damage can cause significant costs. In case of such a damage great quantities of screening material have to be destroyed or sieved again. A product recall, if necessary, can be very expensive for the manufacturer. The analysis of grain size in a material flow is time consuming and not suitable for the detection of a sieve failure arising in a short term. Even a continuous maintenance or a regular exchange of the sieves can‘t prevent a defect. The screen break detection Paddy is helpful here. Process data Costumer: Bulk processors and manufacturers Material: Any kind of bulk material Installation place: Discharge of material after sieve Function: Monitoring of grain size after screening process or fractionation Solution Paddy is a particle sensor which

Moisture measurement to assure material quality Optimal adjustment of the drying process in pellet production with M-Sens 2
Moisture measurement to assure material quality
Optimal adjustment of the drying process in pellet production with M-Sens 2 Application A manufacturer of wood pellets processes raw materials such as planing chips or wood chips (wood waste) to produce wood pellets. After delivery of the wood waste, it is cleaned from extraneous material like metal and stones by a separator. Afterwards the material is crushed by a hammer mill and dried. The crushed material is then transported by a conveyor belt through a 90 °C convection oven. After leaving the oven a screw conveyor transports the wood chips to a storage silo. To assure the material quality, it is desirable for the moisture of the material to be measured during its transport to the storage silo. If the moisture is not correct, the drying process should be changed automatically. Process data Customer: manufacturer of wood pellets (Germany) Material: chipped wood Transport means: screw conveyor Installation location: screw conveyor after oven Moisture: 3 - 8 % Solution After the drying process the material‘s

Dust monitoring with ProSens on clean gas side Exhaust gas cleaning in a pneumatic conveyor system
Dust monitoring with ProSens on clean gas side
Exhaust gas cleaning in a pneumatic conveyor system Application An international mining company extracts minerals under ground for the fabrication of fertilizers. For the long term improvement and safety of the structure stability fillings and binders (dry bulks) with defined recipes are injected locally into former mining cavities. These materials are delivered above ground, stored in silos and afterwards transported in a closed-pipe pneumatic conveying system to storage silos below ground. There the fillings and binders are mixed with a salt solution, pumped to the cavities and eventually harden. The silos used for the intermediate storage are under negative pressure for safety reasons. They are equipped with a silo vent filter (main filter) and a downstream security filter (secondary filter). This assures the air purity according to legal regulations, which is measured constantly after the security filter. When a specified limit value is reached, an alarm should be transmitted to the control room. Process

Mass flow measurement with SolidFlow 2.0 Production of montan wax
Mass flow measurement with SolidFlow 2.0
Production of montan wax Application In an opencast mine, brown coal with a very high content of wax is mined. From this coal, raw montan wax is obtained in different process steps. Therefore, the coal is crushed, dried and impinged with an environmentally friendly solvent to separate the wax from the coal. The acquired montan wax is transported into an evaporation system, where it evaporizes in several stages. After that it is transported via pumps to spray towers, where wax balls (wax granulates) are produced. At the outlet of the spray towers the granulate falls through a down-stream sieve into a pipe. Our customer’s aim was to determine the quantity of the obtained material continuously. Process data Costumer: Romonta, Amsdorf (Germany) Product: Montan wax, granulate Quantity: 6 t/h Installation place: Pipe after spray towers Function: Measurement in freefall after silo Solution The SolidFlow 2.0 has been specially developed for measuring solid volumes,

Continuous dust monitoring with AirSafe Avoidance of Ex areas
Continuous dust monitoring with AirSafe
Avoidance of Ex areas Application A producer of dry mortar needs dry sand and trass for the production process. Both materials are dried in a hot gas heater at a temperature of 500 °C before they are admixed. The hot gas heater uses brown coal dust as combustion material. The brown coal dust, which is stored in a silo, is transported via a rotary valve in free fall to a distribution plate. From there it is blown by an airstream into the drying furnace. The rotary valve and the distribution plate are located in the silo housing. Extreme dust formation, caused by a leakage, can cause an Ex zone in this area. Therefore the plant operator looks for a prompt possibility to detect dust formation. The plant is shut down when a safety threshold is reached, which prevents the development of an explosive atmosphere. Process data Customer: Manufacturer of construction material (Germany) Product: Brown coal dust Installation place: Silo housing Function: Prevention of Ex

Goodbye baffle plate! Continuous measurement of great mass flows without old-fashioned, mechanical techniques
Goodbye baffle plate!
Continuous measurement of great mass flows without old-fashioned, mechanical techniques Baffle plates for continuous measurement of bulk flow rates are used in many plants, where solids are handled in the processes. This mechanical technique offers many advantages compared to partial weighing of bulk solids because no more material has to be taken out of the process. Nevertheless, baffle plates entail some disadvantages, especially during the installation. Those disadvantages are eliminated with the MaxxFlow HTC by SWR engineering as a system for the solid flow metering. In principle, MaxxFlow HTC can be used in all areas, where large volumes of bulk material have to be measured after mechanical conveyor elements, such as spiral conveyors, rotary conveyors or similar mechanical discharge plants. An upper limit for the throughput does not exist. Any material volume can be measured – regardless of hourly performance amounts of 50, 180, 290 t/h or more. The previous disadvantages like installation height or necessary modification measures for mechanical
